CITY OF MASKS by Ashley Capes

A bitter mercenary meets a naive mask-carver. Their city faces destruction.

Sofia is a failure. The sentient magical mask refuses to choose her as its successor. The Greatmask possesses the power to compel others. Without it, the mask-carver will never succeed her father. She cannot protect her city without this power.

Palace conspiracies place a tyrant on the throne. Sofia’s father disappears in the chaos. Her only choice becomes hiding from the new regime.

Notch wants revenge. The grizzled old mercenary escaped imprisonment for a crime he didn’t commit. He grows more determined than ever to kill the king of Anaskar. The task seemed impossible until he stumbles across Sofia.

Sofia carries her Greatmask with her. Notch decides to protect her. She represents his best shot at vengeance against the crown.

Taking Anaskar back from the tyrant proves no simple task. The Greatmask refuses to cooperate with Sofia. Royal assassins hunt them through the streets. Staying alive becomes half the battle.

Sofia struggles with her magical inadequacies. The mask that should obey her fights her every command. Her father’s teachings feel useless against real danger.

Notch’s thirst for retribution clouds his judgment. His past mistakes haunt every decision. Trust becomes a luxury neither can afford.

The tyrant tightens his grip on the city. Citizens suffer under his brutal rule. Time runs out for any hope of liberation.

Sofia and Notch must overcome their personal demons. They face impossible odds with unreliable magic. Royal forces close in from every direction.

Can they survive long enough to save their city? Will Sofia’s shortcomings doom their mission? Will Notch’s need for retribution destroy them all?

The masks hold ancient power. But power means nothing without the wisdom to wield it.
