AMETHYSTS & ALCHEMY by Rachel Rener

I used to eat rocks as a child.

A family doctor diagnosed me with pica, and I spent years in therapy and dental treatments trying to fix what was seen as a disturbing condition. It would take much longer for me to understand that the craving wasn’t an illness at all, but something far more unusual—an ability to draw out the magic hidden inside minerals: tourmaline for speed, celestite for strength, augite for effects I learned about the hard way.

Twenty years on, I’ve buried that truth beneath a white lab coat, working as a small-town pharmacist creating “naturopathic” tonics for everything from memory loss to more sensitive problems. The work pays for my real obsession—travelling the world by plane in search of rare stones. A perfectly normal life for someone who prefers minerals to people.

That is, until Heath Spencer decides to ruin it.

My long-time rival and owner of an overpriced rock shop, Heath has never missed an opportunity to make my life difficult. Now he’s gone further, offering me what looks like the opportunity of a lifetime: a trip to an ancient copper mine in China, home to some of the rarest minerals on Earth.

It is only after I find myself trapped halfway across the world with the person I least want to be with that everything starts to unravel. I begin to realise that nothing I believed about Heath Spencer is entirely true, some minerals were never meant to be consumed, and worst of all—I may not be the only one keeping dangerous secrets.
