TAKE THE SHILLING by Raymund Eich

The Confederated Worlds gave Tomas Neumann everything he needed to be a soldier—implants, training, orders. But they couldn’t prepare him for the reality of war.

Tomas wants out. Out of his backwater planet. Away from his controlling mother. He craves freedom and a father figure to guide him. Enlisting in the military—the act of “taking the shilling”—promises both.

But when Tomas is deployed to New Liberty, nothing is as expected. His fellow soldiers are supposed to be seen as liberators. Instead, they’re met with suspicion, violence, and betrayal.

The implants in his brain can’t help him process the loss of friends or the weight of decisions he never thought he’d face. With every firefight and every mission gone wrong, Tomas questions the war, his commanders—and himself.

Now, with lives depending on him and no good choices left, Tomas must dig deep to find the strength to survive. The biggest battle isn’t just on the battlefield. It’s inside him.

Because the war may not only take his body. It could break his spirit, too.
