PUTTING OUT OLD FLAMES by Allyson Charles

Everyone with a functioning brain knew that kind of breakup was cruel—especially when it arrived in the form of a glittery “Dear Jane” card with the worst poem ever written inside.

Jane Willoughby crushed that card, along with whatever was left of her feelings for Chance McGovern, the moment she read it. Ten years later, he returns to Pineville as the assistant fire chief: older, broader, infuriatingly attractive, and now carrying a young son and the complications of a messy divorce. Forgiveness is not on the table. Even her cat, Cyclops, greets him with a permanent one-eyed glare.

To be fair, Cyclops is like that with everyone, but Jane prefers to interpret it as emotional validation.

Chance, meanwhile, has no interest in revisiting the past. He wants stability for his son and a quiet life far away from old mistakes—especially the one involving the girl he never quite stopped thinking about.

But small towns rarely respect boundaries. When Jane and Chance are forced to work together on the annual Fireman’s Ball, professional distance becomes increasingly difficult to maintain. Chance is used to putting out fires, but the one between them might be the one he finally lets burn.
